The Winsted Fire Department provided mutual aid to the City of Torrington today for a structure fire in the old Stone Container factory complex. The request for assistance came shortly after 5 am when Torrington firefighters were detailed to a reported structure fire at the complex.
Upon leaving their headquarters, flames were visible in the sky. The on duty officer immediately struck a 3rd alarm, requesting ladder trucks from Winsted and Litchfield. Additional requests were made for a ladder from Thomaston and from Waterbury.
Winsted detailed Tower Ladder 1, Engine 2 and Tactical Unit 8 to assist with the extinguishment. About 15 firefighters responded with the apparatus. The fire was subsequently extinguished and apparatus were released to return to quarters about 5 hours later.
