The Winsted Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building at 39 South Main Street on January 15, 2009 at 0221 hours. On arrival, crews reports moderate smoke showing and fire on all 3 floors inside the 3 story wood frame occupied structure.
Interior crews began aggressive interior operations and a second alarm was struck, summoning Winchester Center to the scene and Norfolk and New Hartford to the scene for RIT response.
Interior crews knocked the bulk of the fire down immediately, and spent several hours performing overhaul searching for numerous pockets of hidden fire in the walls, floors and ceiling of all 3 floors. All unit cleared the scene by 0530 hours. Firefighters did an excellent job of confining and extinguishing the fire, ultimately saving the structure.
Two firefighters were slightly injured at the scene from falls. Slippery conditions due to frozen water run off plagued the area surrounding the house and the adjacent roadway.
The Fire Marshal Office determined that an improperly installed wood stove was the the cause of the fire.
