On Saturday, April 30, 2011 at approximately 11:55 pm, the Winsted Fire Department responded to a report of a serious injury motor vehicle accident on Rowley Street. Follow up reports indicated persons pinned in the vehicles, requiring extrication.
Upon the arrival of the first units, two vehicles were found to have been involved in a head on collision, with one vehicle rolling over during the crash. Three persons were found trapped within the two vehicles, and EMS personnel immediately requested 2 Life Star medical helicopters for transportation.
Once the vehicles were stabilized, extrication of the occupants was conducted using both of Winsted FD's hydraulic rescue tools. The Pleasant Valley Fire Department was also requested for mutual aid with a third rescue tool, should it be needed during the extrication process.
After removal of the roof of one vehicle, and a door on the second, patients were removed by EMS personnel, and tranfered to the medical helicopters, where all 3 were flown to a trauma center for treatment.
